Corgi Limited Edition Closeout GM "Old Look" Buses Corgi City Stages Decamp Bus Line Progress or Conspiracy In 1949 General Motors was involved in the replacement of electrical transit systems in over 45 cities (including New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore, St. Louis and Philadelphia) with their own buses. In April of that year, a Chicago Federal court found them guilty of conspiring with Standard Oil of California, Firestone Tire, and others to replace electric transit with buses and to monopolize the sales of these buses. However, the $5,000 fine was of no consequence and GM soon controlled 75% of the bus market. Now 50 years later, the controversy still stands. Certainly the removal of trolley tracks and electric guide wires was progress. However, the noise and smoke pollution plus higher operating costs of the buses lend credence to the conspiracy theorists. Some even go so far as saying that GM used this to discourage public transportation since they made more money on cars than buses. "Old Look" is a New Name Certainly these buses were not advertised as "Old Look" when produced from 1949-1953. This name came up when compared to the late 1950s "Fishbowl" design.
